I said, I'm an actor. GOODMAN: Yes, that's the work. So having the chance to write Black, queer, or Black queer characters and center them in stories that aren't oppression-based is everything to me. And so for anyone who does the same, theres a reflection of that as opposed to getting into a fight with somebody who just may want the clicks, may not have been doing their mental health work, may be on their own bullshit. So I was latching on GOODMAN: To this thing of, like, I'm missing something.
I'm committed to making sure that every little Black, brown, POC, queer kid, teenager, adult knows that they are of value. How challenging was it write about your own story so honestly? I'm so good. This meant enrolling himself in courses at New York Universitys Tisch School of the Arts, and it meant graduating back in 2009 with his degree. Like CHANG: So you say when you were younger, you never thought you could be as attractive as a white man. And so we stand on shoulders of giants and I really have faith in us to be able to continue carrying the torch. Im really interested in telling that story and talking about that nuance. So thats where it began. There were some times where I needed to take a break. There's a lot of gray. The 33-year-old nonbinary writer, actor, and advocate (who uses the pronouns he or they) has made a name for himself writing for Netflix's hilarious animated series Big Mouth, a show about pre-teens surviving puberty. Thats more impactful. If I think about 20, 30, 40 years ago, there were white comedians saying things that were quite inappropriate, that were harmful, that we wouldnt say, Oh, well, thats just a joke. Today, wed be like, No, that was fucking racist. So the same is true today when were talking about gender and sexuality and these things that may be newer to some people, where we get to say, No, thats actually quite harmful and not funny. It doesnt mean that youre not funny, it doesnt mean that youre a terrible comedian now. He is no longer a New Yorker by address, but he will always be a New Yorker by heart. They also get weekly meetings with me and they get to meet all the writers. It's in its infancy stage, but I'm very honored to be able to offer Black artists more than just a "diversity program" but instead a personal investment in them and their work. All rights reserved.
